Today, our home school social group arranged a visit to Loving Mama Farm where we met Corinne and her lovely family. They own a produce farm in Amsterdam NY. Corinne and her husband Matthew moved their business from California to NY after some setbacks on their farm in California, and have set up on 2 acres owned by family here in NY.
They’ve built their farm in NY from scratch. The land they’re using was never used as a farm before. Corinne explained how much effort went into preparing the land, building the greenhouses and even building their house on site!
Did I mention they also home-school their 3 children as well!?
It’s amazing to learn about how they work this smaller 2-acre site and generate the output they do for a thriving farm. Corinne explained how they choose fast-growing vegetables for a quicker turnover of the land. Doing so gives them up to 5 rotations each growing season and maximizes their output. Here in NY, we have a short growing season, so that is a lot of turnover! They are dedicated to no-tilling and utilizing regenerative practices which limit the disruption of the natural ecosystem of the soil that contributes to erosion, which can be a detriment to farming and agriculture. Talk about a mindful and aligned business practice!
Corrine toured us through the greenhouses and fields where they grow a large variety of tasty, organic produce: microgreens, snap peas, cabbage, carrots, garlic, onion, radish, tomatoes, squash, chard, romaine, all types of herbs and gorgeous flowers as well!
Jonny enjoyed trying snap peas right off the vine, plucking carrots right out of the soil, and running around with his friends as we moved from spot to spot on our tour.
We even got a chance to walk over to their 50+ chickens in the fields to give them lunch and check out the eggs in their coop!
They work the land mostly with the blood, sweat and tears… and their own hands. With a smaller farm, they don’t use large tractors and equipment; mostly because it wouldn’t fit too well on site; and because of their dedication to no-tilling and disruption of the soil.
This year they are striving towards operating year-round utilizing the greenhouses for commercial output. This will allow them to keep their staff on year-round, which is a huge milestone for them and their business!
Corinne and her family are remarkable people and a true example of passion, purpose and tenacity. I wish them all the successes on their small, but mighty, farm. Thank you for the opportunity to learn about you, your farm and your beautiful mission!
