EP8:"Cognitive Dissonance: You're Letting Life Live You"
Hey friend, welcome back to Unpopular Opinion—the podcast where we get real about what it takes to grow, heal, and build a life that actually feels like yours. I'm your host, Chelsea Klender, founder of RISEmpowerment—life coach, business strategist, and your go-to truth-teller when it comes to owning your power and rewriting the rules.
Today’s unpopular opinion? “If your life feels off… you’re probably living someone else’s idea of what your life should be.”
Yep. We’re diving into cognitive dissonance—what happens when you keep saying yes to things that should make you happy but secretly drain your soul. And how you can stop letting life live you... and start living a life that feels aligned again.
Let’s get into it.
You ever wake up one day and ask yourself: “How the heck did I get here?” You’re doing “all the right things.” You’ve checked the boxes. You’ve said yes to opportunities. You’ve played nice. You’ve stayed grateful. And still—you feel lost. Misaligned. Disconnected. Like you’re watching your life from outside your body.
That, my friend, is cognitive dissonance. And it's not just a fancy psych term—it’s a siren. A warning sign that you’re living out of alignment.
What Is Cognitive Dissonance?
It’s the mental discomfort we feel when our actions, beliefs, and identity are in conflict.
You believe in integrity, but say yes to things you resent.
You value creativity, but work a job that kills your spirit.
You crave freedom, but overcommit until you’re buried in obligation.
Eventually… this catches up with you. And it’s often triggered by a life event, like a layoff, death or illness of a loved one, separation or divorce, a relocation or a myriad of other moments that give us a chance to slow down and take stock of our lives. Moments that give us a chance for awareness and reflection.
And here’s the thing—you can’t outrun your truth. You can bury it under productivity, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and performance, but it will come knocking. And the longer you ignore it, the more chaos it creates.
Let me ask you:
Do you struggle to make decisions… because you’re unsure what you really want?
Do you say “yes” to things that immediately feel like a betrayal of self?
Do you not even recognize the person in the mirror anymore?
These are all signs that life is living you. You’re on autopilot. Reacting. Performing. Surviving. Instead of choosing. Creating. Being.
And if that chasm grows too wide between who we envisioned ourselves to be and the person we’ve become, it can trigger the proverbial midlife crisis or any life crisis that happens at a point in our life when we realize that where we are isn't where we thought we were going in the first place.
How Did We Get Here?
Because we’ve been conditioned. We’ve been taught that success = approval. That “good people” don’t say no. That gratitude means never wanting more. That we should trust the path—even when we didn’t choose it.
But here’s the truth: Living by default is not the same as living in alignment.
How to Come Back Home to Yourself
Let’s talk about the path back. Not to who you were. But to who you are. The you that’s been underneath the noise all along.
1. Pause the Performance.
Stop doing things just because they look good on paper. Start asking: “Is this true for me?”
2. Name the Dissonance.
Get real about what’s out of sync. Write down where your values and actions are not matching up. Be uncomfortably honest.
3. Get Clear on What Is Aligned.
Not sure what alignment feels like? Look for:
Peace in your body.
Energy instead of exhaustion.
Decisions that feel like freedom, not debt.
4. Audit Your “Yes.”
Every yes is a no to something else. Your energy is currency—spend it where your values live.
5. Rebuild with Intention.
It’s okay to burn it all down if that’s what it takes to build something real. Start small. Start scared. Start anyway.
Here’s the real unpopular opinion: You’re not stuck. You’re just out of alignment. And you don’t need to become someone new—you just need to come home to who you really are.
